For-purpose leaders are passionate about creating social impact and providing community services to Australians who are struggling with issues such as homelessness, climate emergencies, and mental health crises.

They must navigate complexity and respond to workforce and resourcing challenges, often filling the gap when government and the private sector are unable or unwilling to deliver.

Yet their salaries are lower, recognition is harder to come by, and opportunities for talent growth are scarce.

The Australian Leadership Hub’s 2024 For-Purpose Leadership Awards recognise and celebrate achievements, create a forum for peer learning, raise the profiles of organisations and individuals, and advocate for the for-purpose sector as a whole.

While entering the awards may not feel like a priority in your busy day, we invite you to consider the benefits.

The quick and easy entry process provides a moment to focus on recent successes. Getting involved gives you access to a community of people who, like you, are dedicated to building a better society. And, of course, winning puts you, your organisation and the communities you serve on the map!

So be sure to back yourself, give your colleagues the encouragement they deserve, and recognise the outstanding leadership of your board members.

The impact of awards on our 2023 winners

Our 2023 winners are clear about what the For-Purpose Leadership Awards have meant for them and enthusiastic about the benefits of participating in 2024.

Tanya O’Shea, Managing Director of IMPACT Community Services, was named Outstanding Leader (organisation over $3 million category). Tanya says that, in the for-purpose sector, organisations value impact over recognition, so receiving this award after a last-minute application scramble was humbling.

“It honoured the incredible team around me, who improve the lives of others every day. Without them, the work that we do would be impossible. To the leaders out there driving change in your communities, we say, share your stories and seek recognition. You and your team deserve it.”

Trent Miller, Executive Manager – Employment, Training and Social Enterprise at Youth Projects in Melbourne, was named Outstanding Emerging Leader. Trent says participating in the awards has allowed Youth Projects to reflect on the very meaningful contributions made by leaders in the for-purpose sector.

“My own experience winning the Outstanding Emerging Leader Award gave Youth Projects more organisational visibility, enhanced my confidence, and provided a great platform to build my network. Get involved, encourage leaders to participate, share their impactful stories, and gain the recognition they deserve!”

Two new awards in 2024

This year we introduce two new awards, Outstanding Service to Sector Governance and Outstanding Leadership in Philanthropy. These build on the six awards offered in our inaugural 2023 program.

  • Outstanding Leader
  • Outstanding Emerging Leader
  • Outstanding Leadership in Talent Growth
  • Outstanding Leadership in Wellbeing Governance
  • Outstanding Education Provider
  • Outstanding Scholar

The Outstanding Leader and Outstanding Emerging Leader are offered to two categories according to the organisation’s revenue: more than $3 million and less than $3 million. This recognises the constraints that apply to smaller organisations and their leaders’ efforts to achieve excellence.

Why should I get my team involved?

Simply entering the 2024 For-Purpose Leadership Awards brings many advantages.

  • Awards showcase best practice leadership and governance. Awards enable leaders to share how they develop teams, promote execution excellence and create healthy organisations. It’s all about learning, networking and collaborating with peers in an atmosphere of shared celebration.
  • Awards foster organisational growth and sustainability. Awards bring recognition and affirmation for teams and supporters, boosting morale and motivation. By enhancing reputation and credibility, awards help leaders to secure more opportunities, resources and impact.
  • Awards enhance capability in organisations and the sector. Awards help organisations to attract and retain talent, partners and funders. Greater visibility enables leaders to champion the causes they support and to advocate for solutions to the challenges the sector faces.

How much time does this take?

Entering an awards program may seem like a big ask to for-purpose leaders, who are short on both time and resources. However, we believe it is well worth the investment.

  • The online submission for the 2024 For-Purpose Leadership Awards requires responses to a few questions only, plus a statement of 500 words.
  • The entry fee is $50 (including GST).  The two peer-nominated categories are free to enter.
  • Entries are self-nominated, excepting the new categories Outstanding Service to Sector Governance and Outstanding Leadership in Philanthropy.

We urge you not to miss the opportunity to participate in the 2024 For-Purpose Leadership Awards.

Now is your chance to shine.
